Meet
French artist and future collaborator: Dominik Barbier,
and goes to France for 16 years.
1987-2003
FRANCE FEARLESS
Studios, Paris Co-founded, with
French artist Dominik Barbier, FEARLESS:
the first broadcast facility dedicated to electronic creation. Partially
funded on an annual and
individual grant basis, by several departments of the Ministere
de la Culture de de la Communication (DAP, DRAC, CNAP), to
receive and produce media artists, and partially financed by public
and private commission. For 7 years, my specific rle was to post-produce
the work of scores of French and international artists, e.g. Alain Renais (France), Ko Nakajima (Japan)
and Robert Longo (USA).
The FEARLESS Artists FEARLESS was composed of 3 permanent
in-house artists: Dominik Barbier, Cathy Vogan and Leonard Faulon. The
other members of the group were Robert Cahen, Yann N'Guyen Minh and
Jean Claude Poirel. Many films, electronic sculptures, and large-scale,
theatrical installations were created at the studios by these core members,
operating both as solo artists and as collaborators. Of note: <
THE NO WAY BUSTER PROJECT > (1989), spectacle mutant by
BARBIER/ VOGAN, which involved 6 synchronized video sources, 600
sq. metres of sculpture and walk-through environment, and a 23' "main
event".
FEARLESS achievements In 1989 Fearless, with Bernard Szajner
receives the commission: < ESPRIT DE LA REVOLUTION >, spectadclar
for the French Bicentenary at the Jardin des Tuilleries, and produces the material for 3 countries at
the World Expo, Seville in 1992. the Fearless team collaborates
artistically with such figures as TERRY GILLIAM Moebius, Pierre Schaeffer, and especially, Heiner
Muller, with their 1994 biographical documentary <
I WAS HAMLET > (73' Direction:
D. Barbier; Image and Post-production: C. Vogan), and the 7-year project:
<
HAMLET MACHINE >, a large-scale electronic and stage production of his seminal work,
which premired in Marseille in May 2003.
FEARLESS Medi@terrannee 2007
In 1997, Fearless
moved to Marseille, where it still operates today under the above-mentioned
name. The new High Definition facility continues to welcome resident
artists, and focuses primarily on hybrid art forms, situating the productions at the crossroads between Electronic
Creation and Theatre. A new company has emerged witin this
context of live theatrical performance: COMETH (Compagnie d'Explorations
des Territoires Hybrides). My last on-site envolvement with the company
was for the production of "Hamlet Machine". It is now via FTP.
Fearless Cathy Vogan Over
the 16 years I spent in Paris, I created and exposed many personal works,
in the form of single tapes, video-sculptures, installations and theatrical
events, including two electronic ballets: < TALOS &
KOINE > (1988), and for
TELECOM INTERACTIVE, <TOUCH> (1999). Another major work: < THE NIGHT OF THE FULL MOON > (2000), took the form of a 3-hour live-to-air television broadcast
for the Franco-German Cultural Channel, ARTE. This event was given to
me after the success of their 52' documentary, < THREE APPROACHES > (Dir. Matthias Behrens), which focused on my work, and that of two
other artists, Hanno Baethe and Alexander Hahn.

Design for TF1, France3, TV5, ARTE For 4-years, for the company
Kiron TV, I directed a weekly program on European
cultural events, entitled < AFFICHES >, which was broadcast
in Europe (FRANCE 3, EURONEWS), and around the world on TV5. I became the
company's principal editor, compositor, animator, web designer, and DVD author. Most of the products I worked on were
designed for broadcast: TVC, documentary, clip, live-to
air for MTV etc. In 2002 one of my tasks was to finalize 2
daily prime-time shows: "Tout le monde en parle" for TF1, and "On
a tout essaye" for FRANCE2. In 2000-2001, I edited two 52-minute
documentaries entitled "Le Mafia a Hollywood" and "Glamour
a Hollywood" (portrait of film director George Sidney). I continued to
work for Kiron until I left France in 2003. My last two missions were
to work with Christopher Rothko, as compositor and colourist for a documentary
on his father, the painter Mark Rothko, and as team
leader and author of a bi-weekly 52-episode DVD edition: < IMAGES OF WAR >, for client Marshall Cavendish. My team brought a 6-figure profit to
the company in 2002.
